For the longest time, the comic book version of Daredevil was a shadow of a bigger and better known comic book heroes. He crept around on rooftops like Batman and he made jokes like Spider-Man. Daredevil had a moral compass like Superman and a wild streak like Hawkeye. Frank Miller came along and made the Daredevil comic book series a spandex noir tale complete with an unbeatable crime boss that leaves broken people in his wake as he rebuilds the city to suit him better. Marvel's Daredevil takes all of these elements and melds them into something new and interesting, a dark little corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Spirit

Released in 2008, The Spirit is something of a miracle. Gabriel Macht, the charming leading man, is awesome in SUITS, the long running legal drama on the USA Network. Eva Mendes has starred in a load of movies. Sarah Paulson is a Golden Globe winner. Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson are Avengers. The miracle of The Spirit is the fact that all of these people are employable after that cinematic train wreck.

A FATALE Mistake

CAPE TELEVISION CERTIFIED SPOILER-ish REVIEW™

Fatale is a supernatural noir comic published by Image Comics that follows the story of Josephine, a smoking hot femme fatale who is on the run from a violent cult. It recently wrapped up a two-year run.

As a rule of thumb, I’m a fan of the independent comics work of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. Sleeper, Incognito, and Criminal are all solid genre entertainment. Those projects may have come out from larger publishers, but they have an independent spirit and they are free from the entanglements of a superhero universe.

I suspect that the project was also free from an editor.
